Have you ever stood in the shadow of something big – I mean something really huge? As you stood there, you may have leaned back to see the full extent of the object that casted the shadow that enveloped you. What if the enormous presence was your protector – something no one would ever dare to challenge. Would you feel safe in its shadow?
You are safe in God’s shadow!
In Psalm 91, Scripture says, whoever rests (or has confidence) in God’s shadow will be kept safe (verse 1). How big is God’s shadow? Well, it covers the entire universe. His presence is powerful. Who can overtake Him? To rest in His shadow, it’s important to understand that (verse 2):
- He is your place of safety
- He is like a fort (or a fortress) to you
- He is your God and you can trust Him
What happens when you trust God?
When you trust God:
- He will save you from hidden traps (verse 3)
- You will find safety in His presence (verse 4)
- He will keep you safe like a shield or a tower (verse 4)
When you acknowledge that “The Lord is the one who keeps me safe”, He commands His angels to take good care of you (verse 11). Wow, what a promise!
When we trust God and rest in the presence of His shadow, He says:
I will save the one who loves me. I will keep him safe because he trusts me. He will call out to me, and I will answer him. I will be with him in times of trouble. I will save him and honor him. Psalm 91:14-15 (NIRV)
What’s troubling you today?
When something is troubling you, have confidence in God’s shadow. It’s huge. Nothing can overtake it. Recognize that the Lord is the one who keeps you safe. Take comfort in knowing that He is on your side. God wants you to find rest in Him. He wants you to trust Him to protect you – especially when you’re experiencing troubling times.
Reflection…
In what area(s) of your life are you struggling to trust God?
How are “resting in” God and “trusting in” God related?
How do you think your life would be different if you trusted God in times of trouble instead of depending on yourself or others?
Pray for greater awareness of His presence.
